Bioassembly Tree Planting

31.08.24

Earlier this month we joined TERRAIN and Arc’teryx for a tree planting morning on the Mornington Peninsula in collaboration with Regenerating Farms and the Mornington Peninsula Landcare Network.

The event was part of the Greens Bush to Arthur Seat (GB2AS) biolink project, a decadal program connecting two remnant patches of bushland on the Mornington Peninsula to support biodiversity, water quality, carbon capture, and micro-climate buffers for ecosystem resilience.

The geological diversity of the Mornington Peninsula makes it one of the most biodiverse landmasses of its size in Victoria. The underlying bedrock at the site we planted at consists of ~360 million-year-old granite and ~40 million-year-old basalt. These rock types erode into fertile soils that the Peninsula’s hinterlands are known for.

We planted along Splitters Creek within the Swamp Scrub ecological vegetation class (EVC), which will increase the connectivity and quality of vegetation to neighbouring areas. The creek is a major waterway and is the primary trunk of the GB2AS biolink. The creek line coalesces with Main Creek, which meanders its way to Cape Schank before entering Bass Strait at Bushrangers Bay.

Overall we collectively planted 700 trees and subshrubs. Tired but content, we’re stoked our revegetation efforts will contribute to the overall integrity of the GB2AS biolink project and its associated ecosystem benefits and resilience for generations to come.
