ETHOS

OUR ETHOS DEFINE WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE STAND FOR, WHAT WE DO AND WHAT WE DON’T DO.

ETHICS: DO NO HARM

• MEK is committed to the highest ethical standards and business practices with sensitivity toward social, cultural, animal, economic and environmental issues.

• MEK works with brands and organisations that treat employees, suppliers, customers, communities and the environment fairly, respectfully and responsibly.

• To ensure we’re using our skills, experience and expertise where they’re most needed, MEK preferences projects that adhere to at least one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, we’re open to all projects, with the exception of the following:

• MEK does not engage projects that involve the promotion of fossil fuel, animal agriculture, animal cruelty, exploitation of people, single-use plastic, or the destruction of habitat and the environment.

ACTIVISM: STAND UP, SPEAK UP

• MEK was founded on activism and we have a responsibility to use our platform and resources to educate and lead by example to inspire and effect positive change.

• As advocates for diversity, equity and inclusion, MEK established and runs Womentor, a mentorship program for women in design committed to improving gender equality in the design industry.

• MEK volunteers time, profit and resources to donate, rally, educate, bear witness, lobby and petition for important causes across animal liberation, environmental action, social justice and human rights. Organisations we support include Dominion Movement, Street Crew Melbourne, Bridge of Hope Innocence Initiative, Armenian National Committee of Australia, Climate Action Merri-bek and Animal Save Movement.

SUSTAINABILITY:
PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION*

• MEK is located in the heart of Bulleke-bek, Naarm (Brunswick, Melbourne), in an historical building generated by solar power and 100% carbon neutral energy.

• MEK partners with Carbon Positive Australia to plant 20 trees for every client we work with. Trees are planted in Australia to restore native habitats, recover forests affected by bushfires, capture carbon, increase biodiversity and improve water quality.

• MEK is conscious of everything brought into the studio. As part of our procurement process we do our best to avoid products and objects destined for landfill. Our studio materials are plastic free, cruelty free and biodegradable (where possible). Food waste is diverted from landfill and composted. Studio furniture is refurbished or upcycled, and equipment is repaired for as long as lifecycles allow.

• MEK only recommends sustainable solutions to clients across print, packaging, inks and materials; partnering with trusted suppliers across the latest technologies and innovations for reducing waste and environmental impact through printing and production processes.

*We acknowledge that true sustainability is impossible under capitalism. We encourage progress over perfection.

We’re not perfect, but we’re doing our best. We want to work with people who are too.
