The global interior design industry generates over 12 million tons of waste each year. NERS is redefining sustainable interiors by bringing cultural identity to conscious design practices.

CHALLENGE
NERS (Armenian for inside) is a sustainable interior design firm informed by the urban environment of Yerevan, Armenia, capturing the spirit of the city through a unique mix of culture and sustainability. MEK was engaged at an early stage with a clear ambition to create a brand inspired by the Armenian identity yet distinctive in the sustainability space.

APPROACH
While the concept was culturally rich and environmentally conscious, it needed a brand that would resonate beyond Armenia, contemporary yet grounded in place. We developed an identity and product designs that reinterpret Yerevan’s built environment through a modern lens, distilling unique cultural references like the pomegranate, volcanic stone, and brutalist architecture into a scalable design system. Every design decision—from concept to materials to production—reflected NERS' commitment to sustainability and cultural storytelling.

IMPACT
Our collaboration has enabled NERS to bring the spirit of Armenia into homes worldwide, offering an intimate connection to culture while setting a new standard for sustainable interiors. Through the use of recycled materials, water-based inks, low-waste production methods, and lower carbon emissions, NERS demonstrates that design can honour heritage and reduce environmental impact without compromising quality or values.

We live on the unceded stolen lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin nation. We recognise their continuing connection to culture, land, waters and community, and pay respects to Elders past and present. There cannot be climate justice without Indigenous justice. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.
