Restoring Planetary Health

Only 2% of global philanthropic and investment capital goes towards climate and nature-based solutions. Understorey invests in radical solutions tackling the climate and biodiversity crises.

MEK crafted a brand with a clear point of view: connecting the smallest systems in nature with the biggest systems on Earth.

Nature is fundamental to everything but only a fraction of investment capital reaches the solutions working to protect and restore it.

Understorey exists to invest in the people and radical ideas tackling some of the biggest environmental challenges across biosphere, food systems, circular economy, environmental data, and sustainable cities.

The challenge was to bring these different areas together under one brand without flattening the complexity of the work or following the familiar aesthetics and trends of the category.

From micro to macro, everything is connected.

everything is connected.

Understorey is named after the layer of vegetation beneath the forest canopy — a dense and interconnected ecosystem where every element contributes to the health of the whole.

The strategic foundation of the brand came from the dual focus of micro/nature and macro/climate, from anthocyanins in forest understoreys to Earth's interconnected climate subsystems.

This became the brand idea, expressed through visual and verbal identities.

The identity is deliberately restrained with a type systms complementing a visual language that draws from organic forms.

Across the identity, every element works together to define a brand that's intelligent with a distinctive edge. Its scientific direction lends a depth that's uncommon in the B2B space, disrupting a category built on common cues and offering a compelling narrative in the face of ecological challenges.

We live on the unceded stolen lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin nation. We recognise their continuing connection to culture, land, waters and community, and pay respects to Elders past and present. There cannot be climate justice without Indigenous justice.
